How Verity’s AI voice works (and why it talks back)

Published 2026-09-20

Most horror games use recorded lines. Verity is different: the voice you hear is generated in real time from what you type, and its behaviour changes with its mood. Here is what is actually happening under the hood.

What happens when you type a message

When you open the chat and send a message, it is passed to a language model together with the current state of the game — things like how many nights you have survived and how Verity currently feels about you. The model writes a reply, and that reply is spoken aloud using a text-to-speech engine that runs in your browser. Nothing about the world is scripted around a fixed list of answers, which is why Verity can respond to questions the developers never anticipated.

Why it can answer almost anything

Because the replies are generated rather than selected, Verity can react to jokes, threats or genuine questions. It also means the AI can be inaccurate or strange. That unpredictability is intentional for a horror game: you are never fully sure what is behind the voice.

The five emotional states

Verity is not locked to a single personality. It shifts between five states, from a helpful guide to a corrupted stalker. The shift is driven by a combination of your actions and the tone of your chat. The colour of its eyes is the clearest signal. Friendly states will answer you plainly; corrupted states stop answering and start pursuing.

Your privacy in the chat

Messages you type are sent to the chat service to generate a reply and are not used to identify you. The game itself stores scores and settings only in your browser. The practical advice is simple: do not type personal information into Verity, exactly as you would not type it into any public AI tool.

Why this design matters

A talking AI changes the pace of a sandbox game. Instead of following a mission, you build, explore and glance over your shoulder. The technology is what makes the swamp feel populated even when Verity is the only other thing in it.
