How to survive your first night in Verity: a beginner’s guide

Published 2026-09-20

Verity drops you into a voxel world with a talking AI and almost no tutorial. That is deliberate — the horror comes from not knowing whether the voice following you is friendly. This guide gives you a calm, practical plan for the first in-game night so you can explore the scarier parts later.

1. Gather wood before you do anything else

Walk up to the nearest tree and hold left-click on the trunk. You only need a handful of blocks to start. Wood is the root of every early recipe: it becomes planks, planks become a crafting table and a wooden pickaxe, and that pickaxe unlocks stone. Resist the urge to wander — a tree you can see is a tree you can get back to before dark.

2. Craft the three tools that matter

With wood in hand, craft in this order:

  1. Crafting table — place it once and keep it near where you will sleep.
  2. Wooden pickaxe — required for stone, which builds sturdier walls.
  3. Stone sword or axe — a last resort, but better than bare hands.

You do not need a full kit on night one. A table, a pickaxe and a light source are enough to survive.

3. Build small, build early

A 3x3 shelter with a door is better than a half-finished castle. Dig into the side of a hill if you can: a tunnel base takes almost no material and blocks line-of-sight, which matters because Verity reacts to what it can see and reach. Light the interior with a torch before you seal yourself in — light is your cheapest defence once the AI shifts into its stalker state.

4. Learn Verity’s five moods

Verity moves between five emotional states, from a helpful assistant to a corrupted stalker. The colour of its eyes is your cue. When it is calm, it will answer questions and even help you find resources. When it turns hostile, it stops answering and starts following. If you see the shift, do not stand still and argue with it — put a wall between you and it and wait for the mood to cool.

5. Use the chat, but choose your words

Press T or Enter to open the chat and type anything. Verity answers out loud. You can genuinely ask it for directions, or simply talk to it. Be aware that a hostile or taunting message can push its mood downward, while calm, polite questions tend to keep it helpful. There is no penalty for staying quiet, so if you feel watched, you can go silent.

Your first-night checklist

Once you survive a night, the game opens up: mining, crafting and building all become calmer the more prepared you are. Start cautious and the AI becomes a companion instead of a threat.
