How to build a Verity shelter that survives the night

Published 2026-09-20

On day one, a base is not about looking impressive — it is about surviving until sunrise. A shelter that is small, lit and fully enclosed will beat a half-built castle every single time.

1. Pick a site before you have materials

Look for a hillside or a small rise. A hill lets you tunnel in from the side, which uses far fewer blocks than building four walls from scratch. Flat open ground is the worst choice because you can be approached from every direction at once.

2. Stay small

A 3x3 interior is enough for a bed, a crafting spot and a torch. Small bases are easier to light completely, and light matters: dark corners are where the night gets dangerous. Add a door rather than leaving an open gap.

3. Use the right blocks for the job

4. Light every corner

Torches are the cheapest safety you can buy. A fully lit interior removes the dark spots where you lose track of Verity, and it makes it obvious if something has moved inside. Put one near the door, one in each corner and one above your crafting spot.

5. Plan a second entrance

Corridors and a rear exit give you somewhere to go if Verity corners you. Even a short tunnel that ends in a dead end works: it breaks line of sight, which is often all you need for the mood to cool.

6. Upgrade in daylight only

Do your remodelling during the day. Expanding at night means opening your walls exactly when zombies are spawning and Verity is at its most unpredictable. Finish the change, then re-light the new room before the sun sets.

Once your base is solid, focus on keeping Verity calm — our sanity guide explains how. Then build it for real in Verity.
