Is Verity a real AI? How the mod’s chat actually works

Published 2026-09-20

“Is Verity a real AI?” is one of the most common questions about the trend, and the honest answer is: it depends which Verity you mean.

In the original series: no

Verity’s dialogue in ThatMob’s videos was scripted and performed, like lines in a film. The character is presented as an AI, but the writing was human. That is true of most horror storytelling, and it is worth knowing so you are not misled by the videos.

In the Bedrock mods: mostly no

Most Bedrock add-ons use pre-written dialogue trees. Verity will respond to the situations the creators planned for, which keeps the experience consistent and light on hardware. You get the story beats, but not a conversation that can go anywhere.

In the Java mod: yes

The Java Edition adaptation connects Verity to a real language model. When you type a message, it is sent to an AI provider and a fresh reply is generated and spoken. Because the answer is not chosen from a list, Verity can react to questions the developers never wrote. This is also why setup requires an AI provider — either a free API key from a cloud service, or a model running locally on your PC.

CrocoGames’ own free game Verity also uses a real model to generate its spoken replies, with no download and nothing to configure. Read how its AI voice works, or check our chat tips for what to ask.
